I have a sunburn.  Wait, let me rephrase, I have a larger sunburn.  Oh beautiful weather, you really hate my skin.

In related news, I'm heading off to the Ruritania game this evening and have every intention of trying to find an excuse to play with winneganfake's Windrow-Ravenswood deck while I'm there.  I don't care if the game isn't going to be staged correctly, I'm going to figure it out and be cool.  At least until everyone notices my horrifying sunburn and starts mocking for being rather red and unable to feel any pain.

I may have officially killed all the pain receptors for burns in my shoulders.  Huh.

May. 9th, 2010 @ 10:29 am Dragon Age: The RPG
Well, I finished up the short-run campaign I had started to test out the Dragon Age RPG.  I won't talk about the game itself but about the system.

Disadvantages:Collapse )

Advantages:Collapse )

At any rate, I'm probably never going to run that system again. Mostly because I rarely run games but partially because the system itself did not make the game better.  It was just there, I had to learn it, I have preferred game systems that I could have alternatively used.  So all in all, the Dragon Age RPG is good.  Not amazing but good.  Okay even.  For a new player to gaming (we had one of those), it was less than ideal.  He had wanted to play a mage but we cautioned him against it because of the sheer reliance on the rule book that it creates.  So he rolled up a warrior and had a lot of fun with it.  I suspect if you handed it to nest of new players who bought it because of the video game, you wouldn't necessarily create new players out of them without an experienced gamer on hand to run the bad guys.

Ah the adventures in apartment rental.

So it turns out that our landlord AND the resident managers are something.  I will refrain from defining that here and let you, the viewers, decide.

See, they want post-dated cheques for the remainder of our lease *now*.  I can understand that if I'm under a lease, I've told you that I'm going to be sticking around for a while so having my post-dated cheques is just fine.  But I'm no longer on a lease.  My lease expired, oh say, 3 years ago and technically I'm operating on a monthly basis since that's what happens when the lease ends but you don't resign or move out.  I'm under no contractual agreement to stay around here for more than I really feel like it.  So if I were to write them a series of post-dated cheques for a full year, I'd actually have to a) stay here for another full year or b) go to the trouble of canceling all my old cheques if I ever decide to move.

The funny part?  They claim that this is for my convenience.  No, actually.  It's not.  They can still raise rent even if I give them post-dated cheques , resident manager lady.  I get the feeling that the current resident manager is an idiot.  I tried to complain about a neighbor whose dog was howling for about half-an-hour.  Her response?  "I don't hear anything.  Let me know if it happens again."

Of course you didn't hear anything lady!  You don't live on the same floor as them!  You have music playing!  They aren't across the hall from you!  Seriously.  I think I need to move soon to get away from the stupid.  I hate moving.  I really, really hate moving.

Apr. 26th, 2010 @ 01:06 pm Imagine if the Tea Party was Black
An interesting read regarding the inherent problems with the rhetoric surrounding the Tea Party and some of the things said by right-wing Americans (and their media).

Generally people should check out Tim Wise.  He has a number of interesting talks regarding white privilege.  It's very educational!

((PS.  Anything said by Rush Limbaugh can be immediately discredited as evil, poisonous shit.  That is all.))

Apr. 20th, 2010 @ 08:55 pm People on the internet have weird ideas.
But those ideas can certainly produce interesting results!

I've been trying to get back in the habit of drawing on a regular basis to get my skills up to some not-sucking level. To this end, I asked a bunch of people on a forum board to give me a pile of ideas and every day I'd try to draw one of them and upload it. This particular picture has a bit of background (read: geek references). It's two Dancers in FF11 in the artifact and relic gear, well, dancing. No, I don't expect that to make sense to anyone. But the picture turned out well! ((Alright, I had to find some pictures to aid me in this, but it worked out alright...))

I'm drawing again. It's strange.

Also, I'm way to picky about minor details...but I guess that's okay. Now if only I could get better at, say, everything else. Like backgrounds. Man, I'm terrible with scenery.

Mar. 10th, 2010 @ 05:35 pm It's a phone!
I have a new cell phone.  Sadly all my pictures of cacti and unexploded ordinance didn't get ported over (read: I have no idea how to port them over) so there are no interesting pictures of my field work or northern Alberta to let me know who just called me.  I am a sad panda.  And have a phone that lets me text more easily.  And I don't text.  Very strange.

((PS.  Apparently I am generally opposed to smartphones.  Seriously, those things cost way too much money.))

EDIT TO ADD:
Of course I get home to look up product information on the new phone I now have and on the options that I could have chosen from.  Needless to say, the Paradox of Choice is weighing heavily upon me.  I like the new phone, it's a little large for my tastes but it's neat, does things I don't really need it to do and looks cool.  I could have gotten a simpler looking phone that rates poorly due to bad menus and poor menu resolution instead.  Apparently the model I have has known hardware issues.  It may or may not last me my 2 years.  So now I'm sitting around musing whether or not I ought to get it traded in for a "simpler" (but also poorly rated) phone or if I should see if it's known issues are as bad as people say.  Remember, there is a strong selection bias for negative reviews online.

My options appear to be:
1) Tough it out and see if this phone actually sucks and I have to get it returned for another.
2) Bring it back and get a phone that just doesn't perform as well but probably won't break.

Why can't we go back to the day where the choices between phones were acknowledging that it turns on and that it can receive calls clearly?

Mar. 6th, 2010 @ 05:34 am The snow children
Current Mood: coldcold
Once a year, in the deep of winter, creatures of winter inhabit the figures made of snow.  If there was a snowman out front, it gets up and walks away.  If you made a snow snake, it grows, engorged and slithers down the street.  It's relatively easy to deal with these creatures, you just need to hit them with a thrown stick or rock and they will dissolve away.  They hurry though.  Hurry to some unknown destination.  Most want nothing to do with you.  The Good Folk have better things to do and better places to be.

At least until you find a spirit of the dead that has come back on that deep, cold night.  It takes the snow and carefully molds it into the shape of it's former body and tries to approach people, to touch the unwary, and let them share it's snowy grave.

At least this is what I say last night and woke up in a fear because one of the dead spirit had caught the_tall_man  and killed another friend (dream friend, not actually someone I know).  We were panicked.  We'd banished the little girl twice but the_tall_man  was nowhere to be seen.  We crossed the alley again and again, calling his name, poking sticks into snow banks to find him.  But since this was my dream, I woke up before we found out if he had frozen or suffocated to death.  Now I'm sitting beside him while he sleeps.

Be wary of the snow children.  They can be angered if you do not play with them.  Get behind a threshold and stay there.  Stay there lest they take those you love from you.
